Wedding Rings - Choosing the Most Important Piece of Jewellery You'll Ever Wear

Buying the right wedding ring is never an easy decision. With hundreds to choose from you can get spoiled for choice.

The classic wedding ring is plain and simple. There are various profiles of ring to suit the hand including: 'court shape wedding ring', a rounded profile both inside and out, 'flat court ring', which has a flat outside and a curved court inside, 'D Shape', flat on the inside with a curved outside and 'soft court' which is similar to the court shape wedding ring but with a less pronounced curve and tends to be a good match against the shape of an engagement ring.

Deciding on the metal is also a decision to make which is often governed by budget or the metal of the engagement ring, it's generally a good idea to keep the same metals together. You can find rings made from platinum, 18ct white & yellow gold, 9ct yellow gold and palladium.

Platinum is the most precious of all the metals used in wedding rings. It is naturally white in colour and is the most durable. Yellow gold is still a very popular long lasting precious metal for rings, available in 9ct and 18ct. White gold is an increasingly popular alternative. Not as expensive as platinum, it naturally has a darker tinge and is generally rhodium plated to enhance the whiteness but this can need redoing every couple of years or so. Palladium is the most like platinum, it is part of the same family, but is a fraction of the cost so it makes for a much cheaper alternative especially for a gents ring. It is also a very similar colour to platinum and is hard-wearing, the main difference is the density making it is much lighter in weight.

Often the lady's ring may have one or more small diamonds set into the ring to add a little 'sparkle'. A wide selection of diamond set wedding rings with brilliant or princess cut diamonds can be found. The stones can be channel set or rub-over set into the ring to stand alone or compliment an engagement ring.

Matching wedding rings are becoming increasingly popular and are usually a pair of identical rings where the lady's ring may have a small diamond or two and then the man's ring remains plain but in the same style and metal.
